          Description

This dark-looking cloud is quite isolated from the bright stars of Orion, but their powerful winds and light have a strong impact on the nebula, forging its shape and making it a nursery of stars. The Lynds 1616 Dark Nebulae next door add a ghostly veil.

NGC 1788 is an unusual reflection nebula (bluish white) surrounded by a bright red ring of hydrogen gas. The stars inside the nebula are only about a million years old, making them young stars. The ring of glowing hydrogen gas (in red) is powered by nearby hot and massive stars that are not necessarily visible in the image.
